Essential Information On Chronic Back Pain

By Charles Hill

Basically, backaches arise due to many different illnesses and conditions. The cause of such pains could arise from problems on the back or other problems in other parts of the body. People suffering from chronic pain may think that they could be suffering from one ailment such as arthritis, migraines, and the likes which might not be so. However, in many cases, physicians do not even find the main cause of such chronic back pain.

Although doctors might not know the cause of persistent backaches, whenever the cause is found, explanations are linked to some other conditions. The first explanation is that the persistent aches could be due to stress or an injury involving the muscles of the spine. This would include spinal sprain and strain, overload of the spinal muscles due to obesity or unusual stress like lifting or a pregnancy.

Another explanation on the cause of persistent aches on the spinal column is due to a disease or an injury involving the backbones. This could be due to a fracture following an accident or due to osteoporosis. Doctors may also find the cause of the persistent ache to be resulting from degenerative arthritis, genetic predisposition or a wear and tear process related to age. In other cases, disease and injury on the spinal nerves could also result to the chronic pain. This would also include nerve injury as a result of a protruding disk or narrowing of the spinal canal also called spinal stenosis.

There are many symptoms that would suggest a persistent hurting of the back. Some symptoms, however, acts as the red flag that the persistent aches are due to a serious situation. Such symptoms are such as weight loss, recent trauma, fever, and neurological symptoms such as numbness, weakness, and incontinence or the involuntary urine loss. The aches, however, may be followed by other symptoms.

In Greenbelt MD, an emotion highly attributed to persistent backaches is depression. Clinical depression is the kind that normally accompanies this type of persisting pain. This sort of depression is without a doubt above what is perceived as normal sadness that take place for some few days. Symptoms of clinical depression generally happen on a daily basis for a period lasting two weeks.

Clinical depression is usually characterized by various symptoms. First, there is a predominant mood of sadness, hopelessness, and irritability that may include periods of crying. The patient develops a poor appetite resulting to significant weight loss or increased appetite resulting in weight gain. This type of depression is also characterized by either too little or too much sleep. There is also feeling of restlessness and fatigue, low sex drive, a feeling of worthlessness, poor concentration and thoughts of suicide or wishing to be dead.

Chronic backaches may be divided into two types. One type is the one caused by identifiable generators and the other is the one caused by non-identifiable generators. The aches caused by identifiable generators have clear cause that can be identified such as an injury.

In the case of non-identifiable generators, the aches goes beyond the point of tissue healing. In this case, there is no clear cause of the aches. The nervous system misfires and creates pain making it the disease rather than the symptom.
